The National Gallery of Art is organizing the First African Regional Summit & Exhibition on Visual Arts with the central theme Promoting the Visual Arts for Sustainable Economic Growth and Development in Africa. The set Objective of the event is the promotion of visual Arts as a strategy for achieving rapid economic development in the African region as envisioned in the New Partnership for African Development. (NEPAD). The event has been scheduled for September 7-13, 2008 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, Nigeria.
Among others, the event is designed to bring together about 1,500 leaders in business, politics, media, Government and the creative industry from Africa to discuss the key issues shaping the sector.
About 52 African countries have been invited to participate.
The event will feature exhibition, invited paper presentation, business meetings, art networking, study tour of the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) and its environs and summit state banquet.
Exhibition
The exhibition has been designed to be in two folds, that is, the Main and the Off. Artists have been invited from different African countries through their embassies in Nigeria and others directly through facilitators to participate in the main exhibition. The off exhibitions are to be organized by the private galleries within and outside Abuja.

Some private Galleries in Abuja have been communicated to mount works in their spaces for visitors to view during the period. |
For the main exhibition, a jury will select art works from artists in Nigeria spread across generations of artists in the country and Nigerian artists in the Diaspora. These will be in addition to works from other African Countries.

Note that, for the Off Exhibitions, private galleries, both within and outside Abuja will exhibit works of many other Nigerian artists in their collections.
Paper Presentation
The three – paper presentation is aimed at exposing the various business opportunities in the visual arts sub-sector. It will feature case studies from across the world by international speakers and panelists. The speakers are selected from practitioners to commentators and writers from different parts of Africa.

The audience will cover delegates from the visual Arts, African Government Agencies, international trusts and communities in over fifty African countries who will provide inspirational examples of transformation of places and peoples’ lives through the visual Arts.
They are to identify relevant topic of their choice based on the content of the letter written to them as well as the attached ARESUVA marketing brochure that will address the challenges of professional artists and other stakeholders in the aforementioned areas and deliberate extensively on the importance and centrality of the visual Arts sub-sector in African countries’ economies. Their paper will stimulate audience for meaningful contributions from which materials will be available for a standard publication.
